NMPF Executives Talk About Past Accomplishments At 2006 Annual Meeting, Plus Need For Activism In Future

At the 2006 annual meeting of NMPF here last week, NMPF's Chairman and President spoke, respectively about the achievements of the dairy association, and also the need for its members to become more proactive in the future. NMPF Chairman Charles Beckendorf, a dairy farmer from Tomball, TX, thanked NMPF's members for their hard work this year on several high profile issues, including immigration reform and world trade talks. NMPF Delegates Approve Changes to Five Policy Statements
| NMPF's delegates, at last week's annual meeting, made slight changes to several of the organization's policy statements. Those changes included: Expressing strong opposition to the use of food-based economic sanctions that impede exports, and to sacrificing agricultural interests during trade negotiations; Supporting energy-based tax credits and other incentives from which farmers could benefit. Tillamook Wins 2006 NMPF Cheese Contest
| A cheddar cheese produced by Tillamook Cooperative Creamery Association won the Chairman's trophy as the top cheese at the 2006 NMPF cheese contests. This year 10 NMPF member cooperatives participated in the competition, submitting 122 samples totaling 2,252, pounds. More ... |
Burkhardt Wins 2006 Communications Contest Award
| The NMPF Outstanding Achievement Award is given every year "to recognize outstanding achievement in the fields of public relations, publishing, writing, advertising and special projects, in order to advance the interests and objectives of America's dairy farmers." More ... |
CWT Committee Takes Actions
| The committee overseeing the operation of Cooperatives Working Together met last week in Las Vegas to discuss the addition of a bred heifer removal program as part of CWT's milk reduction efforts. The committee approved the creation of a pilot program to remove heifers. It will only be carried out if additional CWT membership funds are available beyond the current level, meaning that any new (additional) membership funding that will come into CWT will go toward that program. 2005 Dairy Disaster Assistance Payment Program
| The Federal Register recently announced that $17 million will be available for the 2005 dairy disaster assistance program. Dairy producers who suffered production losses and dairy spoilage losses, as a result of Hurricanes Katrina, Ophelia, Rita, and Wilma disaster, or a condition related to those hurricanes, may apply for compensation for losses incurred during the 2005 calendar year. National Commission on Modern Farming Examines Dairying in California
| The high-profile panel looking at large-scale livestock production visited California last week to look at the national dairy picture, as well as what's happening in the largest dairy state. The National Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production spent three days last week hearing from dairy experts, including NMPF Senior Vice President Jim Tillison, who discussed the facts about modern dairy farms.
