Immigration Reform Stalls in Senate

US CapitalThe highly-contentious and high-profile effort to reform America's immigration laws stalled last Thursday in the Senate, when supporters of the compromise immigration reform bill failed to pass a motion to end debate on the bill and bring it to a vote. NMPF Board Gets Update on Farm Bill; Addresses NASS Reporting Controversy

NMPF LogoThe NMPF Board of Directors met last week to get updates on many of the issues affecting the dairy industry. The Board ratified the decision by the CWT committee (see story below) to recommend continuation of the self-help program in 2008, at the current assessment of 10 cents per hundredweight. CWT members will now have to decide themselves whether to contribute to the program after 2007. The NMPF Board will review membership participation commitments at its next meeting in November. CWT Finishes Fourth Herd Retirement Round, Removes 53,000 Cows More Money Allocated For Exports; Strong Support for Renewal in 2008
CWT LogoCooperatives Working Together has finished all of the farm audits of its fourth herd retirement effort, resulting in the removal of 52,783 cows representing 1 billion pounds of milk. The CWT committee also met last week in Washington and endorsed the continuation of the farmer-led and funded self-help program in 2008. More ...

 

Letter Sent by NMPF to Trade Representative Schwab Concerning WTO Negotiations

Thirteen commodity organizations, including NMPF, have sent a letter to Ambassador Susan Schwab expressing their deep concern regarding the negotiating landscape described in the "Challenge Paper" recently submitted by the Chairman of the Doha Round Agricultural Negotiations Committee. More ...

 

NMPF Concerned with NAFTA Trucking Restrictions

A letter was sent to each member of Congress on behalf of NMPF and 31 other organizations regarding efforts to block the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) policy to allow Mexican and U.S. trucks to deliver international cargoes throughout each other's territories.
