NMPF Statement on Passage of House Climate Change Bill

Release date: June 26, 2009

The following statement was issued by Jerry Kozak, President and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation, in response to the Friday vote by the House of Representatives in favor of the Waxman-Markey climate change bill:

“NMPF applauds the efforts of Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN) that resulted in farmer-friendly provisions being included in the newly-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The approval of the bill last week by the House now creates expectations that the Senate must also develop similar legislation that offers dairy farmers opportunities under a cap and trade system, while minimizing increased costs.

We need to ensure that agricultural enterprises are shielded from any adverse impacts, and even more, our lawmakers must work to establish opportunities for farmers to participate in selling and trading greenhouse gas credits.

Again, we’re a long way from knowing how this will play out in either the Senate or the inevitable conference process, but NMPF will continue to be vigilant so that the concerns of dairy farmers are recognized in the legislative process.”

The National Milk Producers Federation, based in Arlington, VA, develops and carries out policies that advance the well being of dairy producers and the cooperatives they own. The members of NMPF’s 31 cooperatives produce the majority of the U.S. milk supply, making NMPF the voice of more than 40,000 dairy producers on Capitol Hill and with government agencies.
